I wish you the absolute best as you embark on this new journey at Berea College. As a recent alumni I am very inspired by your sincere efforts of reaching out and getting to know your new community. The ceremony was beautiful and very well-put together. Berea really is a special place, and I hope that you will grow to cherish and treasure it as much as I have. I look forward to hearing of how you will shape and develop this community of remarkable and incredible people. God bless.

You have taken the reigns at a place that is very near and dear to my heart. My life has been enriched in so many incredible ways by the people and place that are Berea College. The time I spent as a student taught me more than I can ever repay. I was unable to take take part in the inaugural festivities due to work, but you and Laurie have my complete support and good wishes. I participate most regularly through the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center. If I can be of use in other ways, I trust you will let me know.

Look! Listen! and Lead! All are essential elements on the journey you are embarking on as Berea College’s President! Berea (College) is a city on the hill that cannot be hid! May God bless you (and your wife) as you carry on the legacy of John G. Fee addressing the education disparity gap, labor skills and ethic, race and ethnic relations, and economic crisis.
I am excited about attending your Inauguration activities on Saturday. If I am not able to meet you in person, there will be many opportunities ahead. Congratulations!
All the best,

Blessings on you both as you lead this remarkable institution into a new phase of its history. May inauguration day overflow with joy for you and all those around you. The committee planning the events surrounding the inauguration ceremony has done a great job—there are treats on offer for everyone. I very much wish I could take part. Unfortunately I’m leaving Wednesday for a conference in North Carolina. Maybe the sand sculpture will be intact when I get back!
In any case, I believe Berea College has found a wonderful leadership team for this time and place. I anticipate good things to come as you cast a vision for the future of Berea College and lead faculty, staff, and students to embrace it.

Congratulations on your appointment as the ninth president of Berea College. I wish you great success as you go forward and it would please me greatly if you could do something about allowing the student body to grow just a wee bit. We had approximately 1500 students when I was there in 1959 and isn’t it about that same size now?
