Academic Search Premier
This is a huge database offering full text access newspapers, popular magazines and scholarly journals. A wide array of subjects is covered, making ASP an outstanding tool for multidiscipline projects.

This database also provides full text to Vital Speeches of the Day. For over seventy years, this resource has made available full text transcripts of major speeches available to the general public. ASP also includes major news magazines and newspaper articles that can sometimes qualify as primary documents.
America: History and Life
This resource covers Canada and the United States from prehistory to the present. Journal articles, book reviews, popular magazines and regional history publications are used. Students working on Appalachian topics will find this database a useful asset.

Berea Citizen Index (1851- 2004)

Issues of this important local newspaper are indexed via card catalog (1900-1984) and database (1992-2007).

  • The card catalog is located between rooms 228-229 in the reference area. Helpful entry points include names of individuals, organizations, or events.
  • The database is available for use on the Public Use Workstations and BC Login Workstations in the reference area.

After locating issues of the Berea Citizen using these indexes, the full text of this newspaper may be viewed on microfilm and printed.

Historic New York Times (1851- 2004)
Full text access to the New York Times from the first issue in 1851 through 2004. It not only provides the article but it also shows where the article was located in the original printed edition. The New York Times is considered the United States newspaper of record for the late 19th and the 20th century. Historical advertisements and images are also included in this database.

This index is a standard feature in most public and school libraries. Odds are you’ve used this resource before now. Volumes are chronological and indexed by subject. Readers’ Guide is located next to the reference desk, so please ask a librarian if you need assistance using it.
Kentuckiana Digital Library
The Kentucky Virtual Library (KYVL) created this database of primary sources including an excellent digital newspaper collection. Dating from approximately 1900-1910, small town weekly newspapers form the bulk of the collection, including the Berea Citizen and the Richmond Climax among many others. The search feature facilitates searching across the entire collection or a single newspaper. Other primary sources in the Kentuckiana Digital Library include photographs, maps, finding aids, oral histories, and electronic texts.
American Civil War: Letters and Diaries
This resource provides firsthand accounts of the soldiers fighting in the conflict as well as those on the home front such (i.e. civilians, politicians, and slaves.) Material is drawn from letters, memoirs, and diaries.
North American Women’s Letters and Diaries
Covering the period from colonial America to the 1950’s, this database offers insight into the personal lives of American women. Women of differing ages, classes, and ethnic groups are included. Besides letters and diaries, the database utilizes journal articles, pamphlets, newsletters, monographs, and conference proceedings.
Polling the Nations
Polling the Nations is a compilation of more than 14,000 surveys conducted by more than 700 polling organizations in the United States and more than 80 other countries from 1986 to the present. All the surveys reported here were conducted using scientifically selected random samples.
ARTstor
“ The ARTstor Library's initial content will include approximately 300,000 images covering art, architecture and archeology. This community resource will be made available solely for educational and scholarly uses that are noncommercial in nature.” New images are added on a regular basis.
Digital Library of Appalachia
The Digital Library of Appalachia is a creation of the Appalachian College Association. This website provides online access to materials related to the culture of the southern Appalachian region culled from member institutions archives and special collections.
