Overview of the Collection

These are manuscripts, correspondence, printed material, notes, interview transcripts, and photographs documenting the research and resultant publications of coal-mine labor historian, John W. Hevener (1933-1993).

History

John W. Hevener was a native of Dunmore, Pocahontas County, West Virginia. His B.A.(1956) and M.A. (1960) degrees were from Marshall University in West Virginia. His Ph.D. (1971) was from Ohio State University. He taught and served as a high school principal in McArthur, Ohio, 1956-1961. College level teaching included stints at Wisconsin State University at Whitewater, 1966-1970; Mankato State University in Minnesota, 1970-1974; and Ohio State University at Lima, 1974-1989.

Hevener is best known for his book, Which Side Are You On,? Harlan County, Kentucky Coal Miners, 1931-1939. At the time of his death he had done extensive research and preliminary writing directed toward a book length treatment of the labor troubles related to the Elk River Coal and Lumber Company in Widen, (Clay County) West Virginia. Other research focused on the social and cultural impact of Appalachian migrants on Akron, Ohio.
