These are the letters of Catharine Graney, of Flemington and Rowlesburg, West
Virginia and Goyne Windle, who worked as a clerk for the Blaine and Potomac Coal
Mining Company. While many of the letters concern the courtship and eventual
marriage of Graney and Windle, there are many other interesting details. Catharine
Graney's letters concern family and social life in Flemington as well as her
teaching duties at a local school. Goyne Windle's correspondence describes work
and social life in the coal camps, studying at Mountain Business College, and
bouts of depression. Other letters from Latelle Graney, Catharine's brother,
and Pleasant Howard, a girlfriend of Goyne's, add further insight into small
town life in West Virginia. Fragmentary letters from other friends and relatives
of Catherine and Goyne are also present.
