Part A: Documents and Records

Series VI Student Records, 1903-82 (RESTRICTED) Reels 1-34

This series is the permanent, official student record and consists of: 1) ledgers which document students enrolled in 1903 through those graduated in 1947; and 2) approximately 14 cubic feet of files which begin with the students enrolled in 1947 and end with 1982 graduates. Until 1929, the Academy offered schooling in the primary grades (1-6) and the records up to that year include those enrollments. With the exception of the first ledger (1903-11), the ledgers are in alphabetical order and cite each student's name, enrollment number, home address, name of one parent, and a number grade. In 1924 the Academy began recording birth dates, and in 1938 it began a letter-grade system. There are a small number of requests for transcripts for the years recorded in the ledgers, but the majority of requests for transcripts and other papers indicating what happened to the students after graduation are in the files beginning with the 1947 enrollments. The ledgers include a "Remarks" column, which documents whether or not the student graduated, reasons for leaving, and notes whether the student worked to help pay tuition. The files beginning with 1947 enrollments generally include applications which state the applicant's name, date and place of birth, parents' and sibling's names, parents' occupations, evaluations in the form of academic and personal progress reports, labor ratings, standardized test scores, immunization records, permissions and excuses, photographs, records of disciplinary action, enrollment and student activities cards, correspondence between the school and parents, and transcripts. In addition to being a vital record of the school, the student records provide some insight into the home lives of students. They also outline the grading system, and document many of the rules and regulations of the school.
