This record group includes the papers and records of E. H. Fairchild,
(1869-89); William B. Stewart (1890-92); William G. Frost (1892-1920);
William
J. Hutchins (1920-39); Francis S. Hutchins (1939-67); and Willis
D. Weatherford, Jr. (1967-84). The bulk of the records relate to
the administrations of Frost, William and Francis Hutchins, and
Weatherford.

Edward Henry Fairchild, 1869-89 |

These are the official and personal papers of Berea College’s
first president. A native of Stockbridge, MA, Fairchild was
an 1840 graduate of the Theological Seminary at Oberlin. After
serving pastorates in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, Fairchild
was principal of Oberlin’s preparatory department before
becoming president of Berea College in 1869. |

William B. Stewart, 1890-92 |
|
This collection consists of fragmentary correspondence, clippings,
copies of speeches and other materials related to Berea’s
second president. Stewart, a native of Scotland, immigrated
to Canada and was ordained a Baptist minister there in 1859.
During his career he served as the head of three other educational
institutions and as a professor of classical languages before
becoming president of Berea in 1890. |

William Goodell Frost, 1892-1920 |
|
The collection consists of official and personal papers
of Berea’s third president. Frost, a native of LeRoy,
New York, was an 1876 graduate of Oberlin College, remaining
there to teach Greek until 1892. Having refused Berea’s
presidency in 1889, Frost reconsidered after the resignation
of William B. Stewart and entered Berea’s service in
1892. |

William J. Hutchins, 1920-39 |
|
These official and personal papers document Hutchins’s
early career as a pastor and educator, his years at Berea,
tours of the Middle and Far East he made with the YMCA, and
work for the Danforth Foundation. A native of Brooklyn, New
York, Hutchins attended Oberlin College, Yale University, and
Oberlin Theological Seminary. Graduating in 1896, Hutchins
served a pastorate at Bedford Church in Brooklyn, then returned
to Oberlin Graduate School of Theology in 1907 as professor
of homiletics. In 1920, Hutchins became Berea’s fourth
president, succeeding his former Greek professor, William G.
Frost. |

Francis S. Hutchins, 1939-67 |

These are the official and personal papers of Berea’s
fifth president, Francis S. Hutchins. Hutchins, a native of
Northfield, MA was educated at Oberlin College (A.B. 1923)
and Yale University (M.A. 1933). Having
worked there as an undergraduate, Hutchins returned to China
in 1925 as an instructor and later representative of the American
trustees of the Yale-in-China Association’s educational
mission (1925-39). In 1939, Francis Hutchins was elected by
Berea’s trustees to succeed his father, William J. Hutchins. |

Willis D. Weatherford, 1967-84 |
|
These are the official and personal papers of Berea’s
sixth president, Willis D. Weatherford, Jr., consisting primarily
of correspondence, reports, and subject files. Weatherford,
a native of North Carolina, was the son of Willis D. Weatherford,
Sr., a long-time trustee of Berea College.
Educated at Vanderbilt (B.A. 1937), Yale (B.D. 1940) and Harvard
(M.A. 1943, Ph.D. 1952), Willis Weatherford, Jr. was a teaching
fellow at Harvard and the University of North Carolina. Weatherford
taught economics at Swarthmore for seventeen years (1948-64)
before becoming a dean at Carleton College (1965-67). Prior
to and during his teaching career, Weatherford also held overseas
assignments with the American Friends Service Committee, the
Ford Foundation, and as a United Nations advisor in Europe,
Africa, India and Malaya. Weatherford was inaugurated as Berea’s
sixth president in 1967. |

John B. Stephenson, 1984-94 |
|
John B. Stephenson, a native of Staunton, Virginia, was elected
Berea’s seventh president in 1984. Educated at William & Mary
College and the University of North Carolina, Stephenson joined
the faculty at the University of Kentucky in 1966. After serving
as dean of undergraduate studies (1970-79), Stephenson became
director of UK’s Appalachian Center, a post he held until
he succeeded Willis D. Weatherford, Jr. at Berea. These records,
which consist primarily of official correspondence, subject
files, and reports, are not yet open for research. |

Larry D. Shinn, 1994 to the present |
|
Larry D. Shinn succeeded John B. Stephenson as president
of Berea College in 1994. Born in Alliance, OH, Shinn was educated
at Baldwin-Wallace College, Drew Theological Seminary, and
Princeton University.
Shinn taught at Oberlin College before becoming dean of the
College of Arts and Sciences at Bucknell University. The records
of the present administration are still active and are not
available for research at this time. |
