Using Periodical Indexes and Finding Periodical Articles
Various Periodical Indexes may be helpful to you. To review, the steps in using
indexes are:
- Choose appropriate periodical indexes and appropriate volumes and/or appropriate
full-text databases. Appropriateness is determined by several things: the
subjects covered by the index, the years covered, the types of periodicals
indexed (e.g., popular or scholarly), etc.
- Look up subject terms (include see also references and subheadings in printed
indexes). Choosing the best terms calls for flexibility, imagination and
alertness to clues.
- Identify promising articles and write down full citations, look up journal
title abbreviations (if using on-line indexes and abstracting services -
print citations, or in some cases, the full article).
- Use BANC to see if
the library receives the journal. Check the subscription summary to see if
the library has the volume/issue you need.
- Locate articles in current periodicals area, bound periodicals stacks,
circulating collection stacks, reference area, Special Collections, on microform
(film or fiche), or in limited access (pre 1940). If Hutchins does not have
the journal but you deem it important to your research, see a reference librarian
about the possibility of securing it through interlibrary
loan.
- Check Full
Text Electronic Journal Holdings for Berea College.
This is a great resource for locating on-line
full-text journal titles included in the many databases to which we subscribe.
Here you will find a listing of the full-text databases we have and also
an alphabetical listing of the journal titles included in those databases.
Just find the title you want by entering the title in the search box or by
clicking on the appropriate letter then scrolling through the titles listed.
If the
title
is included
in one
of these
databases,
the listing will provide a link to the database(s) and indicate which years
are covered. You may also search by ISSN or by subject. These pages will
be updated regularly to reflect changes in coverage of the databases. Please
Note: The
American Chemical Society titles are
not included in this list, since they
have been
added to BANC.
