PURPOSE
Interlibrary loan is a service of the Reference Department. Its
purpose is to obtain materials which are not available in Hutchins
Library or other Berea College departmental libraries for the educational,
research, and general needs of the community, and to loan circulating
materials requested by other libraries. Conditions of this service
are governed by the National Library Code (adopted by the American
Library Association), the Copyright Law, Title 17, U.S. Code, and
special interlibrary loan agreements with consortia libraries.
INTERLIBRARY BORROWING
A. Guidelines for borrowing
- The following should not be requested:
- More than 5 active requests for one person at any one
time.
- Duplicates of materials owned by Berea College libraries.
- Materials for reserve or classroom use (i.e. textbooks,
reading lists).
- Photocopy requests of more than 50 pages.
- Costs for materials borrowed will be handled as follows:
- Borrowing charges incurred for standard requests (up
to $10.00) will be absorbed by the Library. Any additional
charges for research or personal requests must be approved
and paid for by the requestor.
- Overdue fines will be charged at the rate of $.50/day
beginning the day after the material is due for every day
the library is open until it is returned or the maximum
charge of $10.00 is reached. College students, faculty,
and staff can pay fines in cash or they will be charged
through the College accounting office. Town patron fines,
if not paid when item is returned, will be placed on their
circulation record and must be paid in cash.
- Costs for damaged or lost books (as determined by lending
library or after 20 days overdue) will be paid by the requestor.
- Limitations placed on the use of borrowed material by the lending
library will be honored.
- Length of loan is determined by the lending library. Renewals
must be requested at least 5 days before the due date.
B. Procedures
- Patrons needing to borrow materials via interlibrary loan are
assumed to have exhausted Hutchins Library and other departmental
library resources. If so, loans are requested as follows:
- Obtain an interlibrary loan request form from the reference
desk or online. Forms must be completed in their entirety
before the request will be processed. This includes source
of
citation.
- Allow a minimum of two weeks for delivery of requested
item.
- Patrons will be notified by email or mail when borrowed
material has arrived.
- Materials should be
picked up at the reference desk.
Items with due dates should also be returned to the reference desk.
- Requests are processed as they are received. Due to limitations
on staff time it is necessary to limit the number of active requests
from one individual or organization to five.
- This library reserves the right to refuse to accept a photocopying
order if, in its judgement, fulfillment of the order would involve
violation of copyright law (U.S. Code, Title 17).
