The following resources are the best resources for locating literary criticism. For additional sources, please consult one of the reference librarians at the reference desk.

Criticism in Books

Use BANC, the library catalog, to locate criticism published in books available at Hutchins Library.

  1. Select the 'Advanced Search' tab.
  2. Start with a subject keyword search using the author's name or book titles and the word "criticism."

For example, a search for criticism about Ezra Pound would be:

Literary Reference Center - EBSCO

Literature Resource Center - Gale Group
Contains biographies, bibliographies and critical analyses of authors from every age and literary discipline, many in full text.

  1. Enter the author's name in the "author search."
  2. Several names may be returned. If so, choose the correct entry or entries.
  3. Choose "Literary Criticism."
  4. Click on the titles of the entries to read them.

Literature Online (LION) - Chadwyck and Healey - Help pages from the website
Literature Online provides access to the Annual Bibliography of English Language (ABELL), a bibliography of literary criticism with the full text of many journals, as well as The MLA International Bibliography, a few reference sources (Reference) and selected web sources (WWW). The web site includes a complete list of sources for the Criticism and Reference section.

Criticism about an author
For best results when searching for literary criticism about an author:

  1. Select the Search: Criticism and Reference option from the Literature Online home page.
  2. Click on the Criticism link.
  3. Enter the author’s last name first in the Subject box.

Criticism about a work
For best results when searching for literary criticism about a particular work:

  1. Select the Search: Criticism and Reference option from the Literature Online home page.
  2. Click on the Criticism link.
  3. Select the option to search in "Records only."
  4. Enter the title of the work in the Keyword box. Enclose the title in quotation marks if it contains the words “and,” “or,” or “not.”

Academic Search Premier - EBSCOhost

  1. Enter the author's name in the first box, in reverse order, then select "PE People" from the drop-down menu in the box on the right.
  2. Enter the word 'criticism' in the second box, then select "SU Subject Terms" from the drop-down menu in the box on the right.
