Locating and Evaluating Periodical Literature

Using Periodical Indexes and Locating Periodical Articles
Various Periodical Indexes may be helpful to you. To review, the steps in using indexes are:
  • Choose appropriate periodical indexes and appropriate volumes and/or appropriate full-text databases. Appropriateness is determined by several things: the subjects covered by the index, the years covered, the types of periodicals indexed (e.g., popular or scholarly), etc.
  • Look up subject terms (include see also references and subheadings in printed indexes). Choosing the best terms calls for flexibility, imagination and alertness to clues.
  • Identify promising articles and write down full citations, look up journal title abbreviations (if using on-line indexes and abstracting services - print citations, or in some cases, the full article).
  • Use BANC to see if the library receives the journal. (Use the 'Journal Title' option.) Check the subscription summary to see if the library has the volume/issue you need.
  • Locate articles in current periodicals area, bound periodicals stacks, circulating collection stacks, reference area, Special Collections, on microform (film or fiche), or in limited access (pre 1940). If Hutchins does not have the journal but you deem it important to your research, see a reference librarian about the possibility of securing it through interlibrary loan.
  • Check Full Text Electronic Journal Holdings for Berea College.
This is a great resource for locating on-line full-text journal titles included in the many databases to which we subscribe. Here you will find a listing of the full-text databases we have and also an alphabetical listing of the journal titles included in those databases. Just find the title you want by entering the title in the search box or by clicking on the appropriate letter then scrolling through the titles listed. If the title is included in one of these databases, the listing will provide a link to the database(s) and indicate which years are covered. You may also search by ISSN or by subject. These pages will be updated regularly to reflect changes in coverage of the databases. Please Note: The American Chemical Society titles are not included in this list, since they have been added to BANC.

Indexes and Periodicals

Dates indicated are for print versions. On-line versions available only to Berea College community.

America: History and Life   Santa Barbara, CA: American Bibliographical Center, Clio Press, 1964 to date.

This index provides access to material on United States and Canadian history and contemporary life from over 2,100 serials in over 39 languages. This is the most comprehensive bibliographic source for topics in American history.

Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC)   Washington, D.C.: Dept. of Health, Education, and Welfare, 1966 - to date.

The Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) collects and publishes significant education-related documents which are indexed and described in the monthly abstract journal, Resources in Education. Resumes provide a description of each document and an abstract of the document's content. ERIC's Thesaurus, which represents a definitive vocabulary for education, should be consulted in order to gain maximum subject access to the document resumes. The documents cited in Resources in Education are available on microfiche from Eastern Kentucky University through Hutchins Library's interlibrary loan service. Many are also now available full text on-line.

General Science Abstracts   New York: H.W. Wilson, 1978 to date.

This index covers approximately 150 periodicals in the sciences. For almost all research topics in astronomy, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, geology, medicine and interdisciplinary subjects like atmospheric science, environmental science, nutrition, and oceanography, GSI is the preferable index. GSI is an excellent index to articles on the social aspects of science technology.

Historical Abstracts   Santa Barbara, CA: American Bibliographical Center, Clio Press, 1955 to date.

This is a valuable index for articles and other material on all branches of history as it relates to the whole world except for the United States and Canada, from 1450 to the present. One difficulty which may occur is that since the 2,100 indexed journals represent eighty-five countries, not all the citations will be to English language journals.

Psychological Abstracts   Washington, D.C.: The American Psychological Association, Inc., 1887 to date.

Psychological Abstracts covers the scholarly research literature of all fields of psychology including psychiatry and counseling, learning, social services, animal behavior, and human behavior. A periodical index such as Readers' Guide provides in an alphabetical sequence listings of articles by subject and author. While an abstracting service does essentially the same thing, it does it in a different way. Each article is listed with an abstract or summary of its content. Generally these abstracts are grouped under broad subject categories. To gain access to these abstracts there are author and subject indexes which must be consulted. Before using the subject index one should consult the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms, which is shelved with P.A. Because of the differences between indexes and abstracting services and because of the complexity of the Thesaurus, you are advised to seek individual assistance the first time you use P.A.

Social Sciences Abstracts  New York: H.W. Wilson, 1974 to date.

Access is provided here to approximately 300 scholarly and special interest periodicals in the social sciences. The social sciences include the behavioral sciences (psychology and sociology), economics, political science, geography, and social issues. Therefore, SSI is useful for locating periodical articles on a wide range of topics which are oriented toward social problems or the study of people and how they act individually and within groups.

Women Studies Abstracts   Philadelphia, PA: Institute for Scientific Information, 1981 to date. PRINT VOLS. ONLY

Here is a quarterly publication that contains 200 abstracts of journal articles, papers, over 100 additional listed articles, 9-10 book reviews, and other publications. There is an index in each issue. Yearly indexes are published with name (authors of articles abstracted, authors of books reviewed, and book reviewers) and subject indexes.

A more general on-line index that is also available to the Berea College community is Academic Search Premier. ASP provides access to 1200+ journals, many of which are full text. Don't forget to check out Project Muse, JSTOR and Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe (esp. medical & legal sections) for more full text on-line sources. We also have available a list of print journals available in Hutchins Library and also a listing for Full Text Electronic Journal Holdings for Berea College. (Remember to check BANC for holdings.)
