Book Reviews

Because book reviews appear in such a large number of periodicals and newspapers, the most efficient method of locating reviews is through book review and periodical indexes. The appropriate index should be selected by the subjects and dates covered by the index.

To locate a review, first consult an index covering the year the book was originally published. The date can be found in the book itself, in the card catalog, or in a bibliography. Please ask at the Reference Desk if these sources do not reveal the copyright date. It may be necessary to consult several sources before a review is found, so it is generally advisable to begin with the most comprehensive sources. And, indeed, some books never get reviewed at all!

This guide is organized so that sources that are exclusively indexes to book reviews are listed in Section 1. They are usually the best place to begin a search for book reviews. The next section contains additional sources of reviews, though those titles serve many other information needs as well. Section III lists periodical indexes from different subject areas. Such sources index scholarly and professional journals in the disciplines covered by each index and are, therefore, excellent sources for book reviews. Section IV includes indexes that are no longer published but which can be especially valuable for reviews of books published before most of the other index sources were available. Finally, Section V lists a few periodicals that are excellent sources of reviews. It is particularly helpful to know about such periodicals when looking for reviews of recently published books.

Periodical citations such as those found in book review sources typically contain abbreviated periodical titles. Complete titles are most often found in the front of indexes, but occasionally appear elsewhere in the volume. Once you have a complete citation, consult BANC, the college's online catalog to determine whether the library has the needed periodical.

I.     MAJOR BOOK REVIEW SOURCES

BOOK REVIEW DIGEST.   1905 - 2002 .

Index B (No longer available online - print volumes only)

Since 1905 this source has provided citations to and excerpts of reviews from a selective list of periodicals. To be included non-fiction works must have received two reviews and fiction must have received four reviews in the periodicals covered. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author, though there is a Subject and Title Index. Information includes bibliographic data, a synopsis of the book, and citations to the reviews with excerpts from 3 or 4 reviews. Each citation includes the reviewer's name and the number of words, e.g. (160w).

BOOK REVIEW INDEX.   1965 -     .

Index B

A rather exhaustive index, now covering reviews in more than 470 periodicals, this source provides only the citation to the review. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author but a Title Index is included. Because the INDEX contains such a large number of review citations, it is by far the most complete source of book reviews since 1965.

II.    GENERAL BOOK REVIEW SOURCES

NEW YORK TIMES INDEX.   1851 -    .   (Book reviews since 1858.)
Index N

This index covers the New York Times Book Review, which is published weekly as a part of the newspaper and reviews fiction and nonfiction, including children's books. Although indexing methods have varied over the years, the current practice is to group all reviews together under BOOK REVIEWS located alphabetically by title under BOOK.

READERS' GUIDE TO PERIODICAL LITERATURE.   1890 -     .
Index R

As an index to general interest periodicals, many of which contain book reviews, Readers' Guide is a useful source for reviews. In the earlier years, reviews were listed alphabetically under the book author's name. For some time, however, there has been a Book Review section following the main body of the index.

III.     SUBJECT DISCIPLINE BOOK REVIEW SOURCES

Most discipline specific indexes include book reviews. Thus they are highly appropriate sources for book reviews in the discipline covered by each index. Of those listed below, indexing practices and dates of coverage vary as noted. Major subject fields covered are listed after each title below. Consult other periodical indexes for subjects not covered here.

IV.     RETROSPECTIVE INDEXES TO BOOK REVIEWS

The following sources are no longer published. In some cases, however, they are particularly useful in locating reviews of books published in the 1800's and early 1900's.

CURRENT BOOK REVIEW CITATIONS.   1972 - 1982.

Index C

Because approximately 1000 periodicals were covered, this index is the most complete source for book reviews for 1972-1982.

POOLE'S INDEX TO PERIODICAL LITERATURE.   1802 - 1881; SUPPLEMENTS 1888 - 1906

Index P

As virtually the only periodical index for the time period covered, POOLE'S can be quite valuable. Book reviews are included but may be difficult to locate because they are entered under the subject. Reviews of poetry, drama, fiction, or any work which does not have a "subject" is entered under the author's name.

CUMULATIVE BOOK REVIEW INDEX.   1905 - 1974.

Index C

Contained in this index are all the titles from the BOOK REVIEW DIGEST, 1905-1974, as well as all reviews from Library Journal, 1907-1974, Saturday Review, 1924-1974, and Choice, 1964-1974. Although neither the multiple entries nor the review excerpts from the BOOK REVIEW DIGEST are included, this source will contain more titles of books published 1905-1974 than any other single index. There are three author volumes and three title volumes.

V.     PERIODICAL REVIEW SOURCES

The periodicals listed below are either devoted exclusively to reviews or contain a significant number of reviews. Recent issues of periodicals such as these can be consulted for reviews of new books, particularly if the reviews have not yet been indexed. Almost all professional journals also contain reviews of books relevant to their areas of research and study.

CHOICE

Contains short reviews of scholarly books in all subject areas.

NEW YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS

Critical review essays on books and the ideas presented in them comprise most of this resource. Reviews are typically written by scholars and authorities in the area under discussion.

NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

The Times covers a number of titles each week with the reviews ranging from long and critical reviews by prominent writers to brief notices of new paperbacks and mysteries. Coverage is much broader than in the New York Review of Books.

TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT

As a supplement to the London Times, the TLS is an important source for scholarly articles on books from all disciplines. Although important American publications may be reviewed in TLS, this is an excellent source for books published in England and other countries.

WOMEN'S REVIEW OF BOOKS

Review essays of books by and about women make up this monthly publication. Discussions of issues and ideas are presented in the context of the books being reviewed.
