Joshua Guthman is a cultural historian with a particular interest in religion, emotional experience, and music. He is revising his book manuscript, What I Am ’Tis Hard to Know: Primitive Baptists, the Protestant Self, and the American Religious Imagination, for publication. Before coming to Berea, Professor Guthman taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Guilford College, and from 2006 to 2009 he was the music editor of Southern Cultures, a quarterly published for the Center for the Study of the American South.
