Who is eligible for assistance from CHS?

Full time students, faculty, and staff are eligible for College Health Service. Faculty-dependents and Staff-dependents age 3 through 18 (or as long as covered by parents' insurance) are also eligible. Berea College students may pay an additional health fee for family members for eligibility of CHS services.

How much does this cost?

There is no charge to students for office visits, although a small fee will be charged for immunizations, medications, and supplies received. Any charges can be billed to their college account or paid directly to CHS. Students may charge prescription medications obtained at the Berea Saint Joseph Hospital Pharmacy to their college account, or may purchase them directly at any pharmacy.

A $5 office fee will be collected from Faculty, Staff, and their dependents at the time of service, after which employee insurance will be billed for any remaining charges.

What is the difference between the health fee and the insurance charge?

Health Fee ($50*/semester)
College Health Services (CHS) is available to all degree-seeking students by virtue of the health fee that is included in the term bill, and is charged to ALL STUDENTS irrespective of insurance status or if the student uses CHS or not. It covers unlimited visits to CHS, including counseling, strep screening, STD exams, pap smears, etc. Student dependents (spouse and children over 3 years of age) may also use these services for an additional $25 health fee per semester.

Student Health Insurance
Student health and wellness is a high priority at Berea College. Campus Health Service along with medical health insurance ensure that students may obtain preventive health care and necessary treatment for illness and injury.

All students attending Berea College are required to carry health insurance through the College. For those students who are covered by parental or individual plans, this mandatory College policy serves as secondary, "excess" coverage. The policy provides primary coverage for students with no insurance.

The insurance premium is part of the student expense budget and reflected there as a fee. Financial Aid is applied to this cost, based on need as established by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Students' dependents may be added to the College plan at an additional premium.

Policy benefits and exclusions are explained in a brochure sent to each student along with an insurance card. This card must be presented when seeking medical care. Students are responsible for submitting claim forms. The College Health Service Office Manager may assist with this task.

Will my information be kept confidential?

Your medical record is confidential. All files are locked up at the close of each day. No information is released to anyone on campus or elsewhere without your written authorization. Please let us know if you have any concerns about this matter.

What do I do if I have to leave a phone message?

When leaving a phone message, let the receptionist know the urgency of the problem, whom the call is concerning, and the phone number where you can be reached. Calls will be returned as soon as possible. If you are calling for a prescription renewal, please specify the name of the medication and also the pharmacy you wish to use.

What do I do if CHS is closed?

When CHS is closed, patients can speak with the provider on call by calling St. Joseph Berea Hospital at 986-3151. Ask that the provider on call for CHS return your call. Leave your name and phone number. If you have an emergency, go directly to the nearest Emergency Room. If at Berea Hospital and hospitalization is required, the physician on call will be notified. Any needed follow-up care should be arranged with CHS the following week day.

Do I need an appointment?

For your convenience, we see patients by appointment. To schedule an appointment with one of the providers at CHS, call (859)985-3212. Time is allowed each day to see persons with acute illnesses and injuries. Emergency situations are handled as quickly as possible. If possible, please call ahead to inform the staff of any emergencies coming in. If you cannot keep an appointment, please call to cancel so others may be scheduled.
