GAP Training and Farmer’s Markets

Grow Breathitt County Participants in the Grow Appalachia program have had a great year of gardening. Some first time gardeners, some who are more experienced and some somewhere in between all have taken part in planning, planting, growing, weeding, hoeing, and most rewardingly, harvesting. Now with many thanks to the program vegetables are plentiful in many homes in the county. Some are so plentiful that some of our participants with the Grow Breathitt County Program have decided to take steps toward selling their vegetables at the Farmer’s Markets in the county. Two families/participants recently completed their GAP Diploma this past Tuesday evening and will be receiving their diploma in the mail soon. This GAP (Good Agriculture Practices) Diploma is a requirement for selling at the local farmers markets. Grow Appalachia has made an impact on these families and they have saw the results which will let them move into the commercial side of gardening We are happy to be a small part of that. Not only are we promoting healthy eating for these families. We are helping their bottom line by saving them money on groceries and now allowing them to earn extra income with the extra produce they are now harvesting. Quicksand Farmer's Market
