Tell us about yourself.

I was born and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, which is a suburb of Washington, D.C. Both my parents are Washingtonians. After high school I attended American University in Washington D.C., getting a B.A. in music. I play the trumpet and I compose music, as well. Over the years music has taken me all over the country and to Canada, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. I’ve worked in a variety of fields, but right now I am a freelance Web developer. My wife of almost a year, Lillian, is a visual artist.

How did you hear about Berea?

Honestly, I do not remember! I am pretty sure it was an article somewhere, and I know that the article mentioned the fact that the students do not pay tuition.

Why do you support the College:

I am not a Christian myself, but I have a profound admiration and respect for an institution that is inspired by Christian values to be of service. I do it, quite simply, to show my support. It is my personal opinion that education is one of the greatest investments this country can make in its young people. It is vital that youth aspire to education. It is vital that they engage themselves and others in critical thought and that they examine their lives. Not to put too much on their shoulders, but they are ones who are going to transform our communities, nation, and the world for the better.

What message would you like to share with Berea’s students?

Don’t just do what you are expected to do. If you get the opportunity to travel, even just around the country, do it. There’s enough variety in America alone to fill anyone with wonder and joy. Be yourself and enjoy life to the greatest degree that you can. Be of service to someone else.
