2-6-08

The Berea College GEAR UP planning teams from all Regional middle and high schools will participate in the GEAR UP Institute for a College-Going Culture: Transition to High School conference March 5th and 6th in Louisville.  The conference is a training and planning opportunity provided through the Kentucky GEAR UP Alliance.

The keynote address will feature Scott Habeeb. Mr. Habeeb is a former high school Assistant Principal in Virginia now with Solutions, Etc. Inc.  He has been working with school systems specializing in Freshman Transitions since 2000. Mr. Habeeb will also participate in the workshop presentations.

The focus of the conference is to plan for the success of transitioning freshmen and working with young high school students toward academic success.

The workshop will progress with three focus strands: 1) Understanding Freshmen: Developmental Needs; 2) Improving Academic Performance; 3) Learning from Freshman Academies.

The Berea College GEAR UP teams will be joined for the conference by participants from GEAR UP Kentucky, WKEC GEAR UP and SOAR and GRREC GEAR UP.

After the workshop the Berea College GEAR UP planning teams will focus on preliminary planning for next school year’s GEAR UP activities and support services with each school. For additional information contact:  Kim Gardner, Berea College GEAR UP Professional Development Coordinator.
