Berea College GEAR UP Recognizes Newspaper Partners in Education

2-1-08

When it comes to having a finger on the pulse of a community, few groups do it better than local newspapers.  Within their pages are found the life of a county, spotlighting changes, events, good times and bad as well as births, deaths and weddings.  Through a newspaper a child can learn to read better, increase their vocabulary and gain knowledge of the world beyond their town and broader community.

By encouraging your child to read the local paper with you, parents can share in the events effecting daily lives. Through pictures illustrating dramatic circumstances and stories rich with detail that television news has little time for, county newspapers are our source for the real local news. They are always present at school board meetings, city council gatherings and any other event large or small that has an impact on their readership.

Very few of us don’t have a newspaper clipping tucked away that notes a significant time or happening in our lives.  They are a critical piece in the quilt of our education and our accomplishments.

In February, Berea College GEAR UP will be honoring those newspapers having such an impact in the lives of our schools, our students and their families.  They have each supported and featured GEAR UP activities and information, highlighting the successes of our students and the progress of our schools.

Berea College GEAR UP recognizes our community newspapers - our partners.
