Berea, KY - The College For Every Student (CFES) foundation, formerly the Foundation for Excellent Schools, partnering with Berea College GEAR UP Partnership have named a select 80 students from eight area high schools to be CFES National Scholars.
The 9th grade students, nominated by their school’s GEAR UP counselors, will be part of the nationally recognized CFES leadership program throughout their high school career. Focusing on leadership, the scholars will enhance their education and prepare for a successful post-secondary experience.
According to Linda Stone, Direct Services Coordinator with Berea College GEAR UP and CFES National Scholars Coordinator, the scholars will engage in activities that will develop their leadership, goal-setting abilities and improve their knowledge of college life.
“These students all have great leadership potential.” Stone said. “Through this program they will work with students in other schools to enhance those abilities and provide assistance in transitioning younger students into high school.”
Other activities planned for the Scholars are multiple opportunities to join in college visits, participate in career development workshops and overnight trips to sites both in and outside Kentucky. The students and their parents will gain in-depth information on components that help students move toward college.
During the installation workshop in December the scholars were engaged in leadership sessions with CFES national trainer Christine Michaels while parents participated in a tour of Berea College campus and worked with GEAR UP Parent Engagement Coordinator Michelle Scarberry on an introduction to GEAR UP.
The scholars also teamed with students from other high schools for training in the True Colors: Basic Awareness program.
Robin Adams, a True Colors Facilitator, defined the program, “True Colors is a method to help us identify the spectrum of personality traits and styles by distinguishing individual strengths, valuing differences and creating unity within a group.” Adams continued “Through the skills the students gained they can be better leaders by identifying and knowing how to work with differing personality styles.”
