“Folks
here regard Berea as a unique place and believe its values are
good ones, so they’re happy to continue to support the college.”
—Boyd
McDowell
Director of the Seabury Foundation
Berea College is highly dependent on foundations and corporate
entities that provide more than 20 percent of Berea’s annual
income. Foundations often make challenge grants, which can
double the value of individual gifts, and many corporations match
their employees’ charitable contributions.
The strong and continuing support of foundation and corporate
friends makes possible such efforts as:
- educational scholarships
(tuition replacement for Berea students)
- endowment campaigns (e.g.,
portable computers for students)
- new academic programs (e.g.,
Entrepreneurship for the Public Good)
- construction and renovation
of buildings (e.g., the Child Development Lab).
The Foundations and Capital Projects Office works to match foundation
interests with Berea College needs, and the staff prepares proposals,
applications, and reports. We welcome visits from foundation staff
and are eager to visit foundations in their home offices as well.
