Tyler Castells PhotoTyler Castells

People around Berea rarely see Tyler Castells without his camera. As a student photographer with Berea’s Public Relations Department, Tyler chronicles campus life through pictures. His photographs are published in Berea College Magazine, on the College’s Web site, and in other publications.

Shooting photographs is only a small part of Tyler’s job. Much of his time is spent organizing the thousands of Public Relations photos, including tracking down obscure photos and researching archival technology to help Public Relations manage its many images. A senior art studio major with an emphasis in sculpture, Tyler has had courses in metalworking, which prepared him to work with photography equipment.

First assigned a labor position as a residence hall custodian, when Tyler heard about an available journalism job, he decided to check into it, hoping to improve his writing skills. Instead, because of his skill with a camera, he was hired on the spot to photograph sports events and other campus happenings. His work has led to several freelance photography jobs.

“When I learn things that are meaningful to me, and I have a job that fuels that learning, it feels less like work and more like fun.”
