Geri Guy PhotoGeri Guy

Since her freshman year, Geri Guy has worked in Berea’s Center for Excellence in Learning Through Service. A senior who is excelling in her history major, she is actively involved with a literacy program for local children and is leading the planning for next year’s Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.

During spring break 2007, Geri traveled with other students to New Orleans, and the group is filming a movie to raise awareness of the plight of individuals still affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Her service work led to an internship during summer 2007 with the Kentucky Remembers Project, a camp for middle and high school students that focuses on Kentucky’s civil rights history.

Inspired by her service work, Geri plans to do graduate work with the goal of teaching ethnic studies and social justice.

“I want to study and write about the effects of divorce on children and teens and eventually start a summer camp for children of divorce, single parent homes, or other risk factors.”
