FAQ for Families of Students

What should my student do if he or she feels sick?

If they are experiencing flu related symptoms, including a fever, students should go to College Health Service for a diagnosis.  If they become ill during hours when CHS is not open, they should seek attention at the Emergency Care Center.

Will they be tested for the flu virus?

Because of the large number of cases currently active in Kentucky and the U.S., diagnosis is now being based on the presence of combined flu related symptoms as recommended by the Center for Disease Control.

What happens if they do have the flu?

If the student is going home, they are provided with a face mask and are transported to their residence hall to get their personal items and wait to be picked up.

What happens if they can’t go home?

The college provides a face mask and arranges for transportation to their residence hall to get the items they need, and then transports them to a quarantine house on campus with other students.

What if I can’t pick them up on the same day they get sick?

They can stay in the quarantine house until you are able to pick them up the next day or as soon as possible.

What happens in a quarantine house?

Students are given a clean bed, and fresh linens are provided as needed. Meals and soup are provided to the house and many liquids are available at all times.  The house has a working phone and internet access. Students are checked on by College staff several times a day and by medical staff as needed.  Temperatures are recorded according to a set schedule to determine when students can return to their residence halls, class and work.

How is their condition monitored?

College staff ensures that they are getting medicine, if prescribed. They will be transported to the hospital if symptoms should worsen and a physician determines they need specialized care. A College physician checks on the residents daily.

When can they leave the quarantine house or return to school from home?

They may return to school and residence when they have been without fever for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medicine.

Will the school close down?

No.  The school is operating under a protocol for such events and managing the epidemic through careful monitoring and preventive cleanliness efforts.   We appreciate your help by caring for your student at home, whenever possible, if he or she has the flu.
