3/4/2010: Second Wave of H1N1 (Swine Flu)
Dr. Miriam David, Director, College Health Service
As many of you are probably aware, we are now in a second wave of Swine Flu. The outbreak began about 10 days ago and of three cultures sent to the Kentucky State Lab, two have been positive for H1N1.
Thus far Health Service has seen about 10 cases and have recommended isolation to those folks. What can you do?? Once again, remember to:
- Always cover your cough—either with your elbow or a tissue that you then dispose of
- Wash your hands frequently
- Drink plenty of liquids (those high in Vitamin C are especially helpful: OJ, cranberry, grapefruit)
- Rest is essential so get to bed early, nap if possible
If you do develop a fever (over 100 degrees), your symptoms worsen or you know that you have been exposed to someone with swine flu, make an appointment and come to CHS.
Flu vaccine is still available and there is no charge for it. Please keep in mind that it takes approximately two weeks to develop immunity; it is not immediate. Please email by Friday, March 5 at 10am if you would like the vaccine. It has to be ordered and will then be available next week in CHS.
You can get more information on swine flu in general and the local situation from the Berea College Web site, “Flu News”. It is updated on a regular basis. CDC.gov is another excellent source.
