Nicholas Citizen
Internship: College Summit, Charleston, West Virginia
Nick is a senior from Atlanta, Georgia, majoring in Business Management. Nick’s internship was with the West Virginia office of the national non-profit College Summit. He was responsible for conducting a number of College Summit’s college preparation workshops in West Virginia as well as several other states. Not only did he assume responsibility for the logistics and organization of these workshops but he also taught several of the instructional sessions.
Michael Cox
Internship: Mountain Association for Community Economic Development, Berea, Kentucky
Michael is a junior from Lexington, Kentucky, majoring in Political Science with a German minor. Michael’s internship was in a collaborative effort between MACED and the advocacy group Kentuckians for the Commonwealth called the High Roads Initiative. He performed substantial public policy research chosen to identify potential legislative initiatives as well as working on planning and conducting focus groups.
Bolotbek Esenov
Internship: Center for Rural Development, Somerset, Kentucky
Boha is a senior from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, majoring in Political Science with a Minor in Business Administration. During his internship with the CRD Boha served as an assistant to the youth program coordinator in the leadership, education and training division during the Center’s recognized series of youth camps including the Rogers Explorers, the Rogers Scholars and the Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute. He was a counselor, planner and mentor to dozens of Kentucky young people.
Samantha Franklin
Internship: Lotts Creek Settlement School, Cordia, Kentucky
Samantha is a junior from Liberty, Kentucky, majoring in Agriculture and Natural Resources. Lotts Creek is the last of the famous Kentucky settlement schools still serving as a full-time K through 12 public school as well as the hub for a number of community development and social service ventures. Samantha worked with the prescription drug and housing repair programs and the food pantry in both administrative and organizational roles. She also spent much time organizing the decades’ long archives of the organization. The results of that work are now in the Berea College Hutchins Library.
Rosanna Green
Internship: NewCities Institute, Lexington, Kentucky
Rozee is a senior from Morenci, Michigan, majoring in Sociology with a Peace and Social Justice minor. Her internship at NewCities Institute, a division of the Kentucky League of Cities, revolved around researching issues related to community development and civic engagement, working on the development of a collegiate leadership program, investigating community building best practices, and finding information about the latest NewCity as well as cities for future projects. She also worked on the corporate strategic plan.
Letisha Hemanes
Internship: New Opportunity School for Women, Berea, Kentucky
Letisha is a senior from Atlanta, Georgia, majoring in Sociology. During her tenure as an intern at the NOSW she provided general office and organizational assistance during the School’s residential program for mountain women. Her primary contribution during the internship was the revision of the entire donors’ database and implementation of professional grade database management software. After mastering the unfamiliar software Letisha then trained NOSW staff in its use and maintenance.
Rabecca Hichilo
Internship: Mountain Association for Community Economic Development, Berea, Kentucky
Rabecca is a senior from Zambia majoring in Accounting and Economics. As the major project during her internship she updated, administered, compiled and analyzed MACED’s annual business survey which the organization conducts with over one hundred of the organization’s business clients. She also researched a comprehensive approach for MACED’s use in delivering technical assistance to its clients.
Samuel Imagie
Internship: Save the Children, Berea, Kentucky
Sam is a junior from Berea, Kentucky, majoring in Business Administration. As the accounting intern at Save the Children Sam worked on monthly reports and analysis of internal controls. He was also responsible for the development of several reporting and auditing templates to be used for streamlining STC’s reporting and recordkeeping processes. In addition to these duties Sam also trained himself in the use of an advanced accounting and management software system and trained Save the Children staff in its use.
Salome Kiwara
Internship: Lexington Art League, Lexington, Kentucky
Salome is a junior from Kikuyu Town, Kenya, majoring in Art History with a minor in French. Working at the LAL, Central Kentucky’s oldest and largest non-profit visual arts organization, Salome was responsible for coordinating and organizing 5/3 Bank Fourth Fridays, a series of open house gallery openings. She also worked on a series of shows which revolved around such diverse topics as art therapy for seriously ill children and recycling. In keeping with her interest in law as it pertains to artists she provided guidance on legal questions to a number of Kentucky artists.
Zackary Kocher
Internship: AIDS Volunteers of Lexington, Lexington, Kentucky
Zack is a senior from Chase, Kansas, majoring in Speech Communication. During the course of an intense experience at AVOL Zach engaged in a wide range of activities in keeping with his internship proposal’s stated goal of ‘non-profit administration.’ He helped organize a major fundraiser, developed an electronic newsletter for clients and donors, consolidated and repaired diverse databases and performed extensive research on various grant proposals.
Thaddieus McCall
Internship: Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, Renfro Valley, Kentucky
Thaddieus is a junior from Atlanta, Georgia, majoring in History. By shadowing the museum’s director on a regular basis Thaddieus gained a broad knowledge of how a tourism and performing arts oriented non-profit really works. He conducted presentations for public school teachers on the use of the museum as a teaching tool, revised several musicians’ exhibits and the main hall display, led tours for various groups and organized archival materials and instrument store rooms.
Stephanie Mathies
Internship: Elementz Hip Hop Youth Arts Center,Cincinnati, Ohio
Stephanie is a junior from Liberia majoring in Business Administration. While interning with Elementz Hip Hop Youth Arts Center, she focused on honing her accounting skills. Stephanie was also able to train employees in some of the software programs that she became proficient in. In addition, she spent time working on marketing, updating job descriptions of the employees, and maintaining and updating a member database.
Givenson Piard
Internship: Louisville Development Bancorp, Louisville, Kentucky
Givenson is a senior from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, majoring in Business Administration. At the Louisville Development Bancorp, he worked on developing a business proposal composed of recommendations for the future of the Louisville Enterprise Group, in addition to developing promotional material for the Group. Givenson also worked on various accounting- and financial-related tasks for the Louisville Community Development Bank.
Charla Ruble
Internship: Center for Rural Health, Hazard, Kentucky
Charla is a senior from Parkersburg, West Virginia, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Appalachian Studies. While at the Center for Rural Health, Charla spent time learning how to construct SOAP narrative notes which allowed her to assist in taking these notes as well as documenting mental status examinations and facilitating therapeutic interventions. She also worked on the creation of therapy groups at the East Kentucky Veteran’s Clinic and was involved in community health fairs.
Janetta Shilling
Internship: Blue Ridge School of Massage and Yoga, Blacksburg, Virginia
Janetta Shilling is a senior from Louisville, Kentucky, majoring in Business. While at the Blue Ridge School of Massage and Yoga, Janetta worked on a variety of projects to improve the efficiency of the daily office operations. She spent time on marketing, including a prospective student packet and the e-newsletter, gathering graduate information, and creating an Excel workbook of student accounts. Janetta also worked on coordinating events and organizing workshops in addition to learning various massage and yoga modalities.
Etagegn Taddesse
Internship: Waysmeet Healing Arts Center and Saint Joseph Berea Hospital, Berea, Kentucky
Etagegn is a junior from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, majoring in Chemistry. She spent time at two organizations for her internship in public health. At Saint Joseph Berea Hospital, Etagegn focused on laboratory work and assisted in the laboratory department. At Waysmeet Healing Arts Center, she worked on program administration which included coordinating a community acupuncture clinic, implementing and generating health materials for clients, and doing strategic market planning.
Marina Thompson
Internship: South Eastern Ohio Legal Services,Portsmouth, Ohio
Marina is a senior from Los Angeles, California, majoring in Sociology. Marina focused on researching predatory lending practices during her internship at South Eastern Ohio Legal Services. She also investigated patterns of predatory lending from sub-prime lending agencies that are now foreclosing on properties across the state of Ohio.
Megan Torres
Internship: Good News Mountaineer Garage, Charleston, West Virginia
Megan is a junior from Stafford, Virginia, majoring in Business Administration with an emphasis on Marketing and Management and is also pursuing a minor in Computer Science. Throughout her internship at the Good News Mountaineer Garage, Megan created a short and long term marketing plan for the organization, which included assessing the current promotional mix and identifying potential market targets. She also helped with a variety of marketing and development tasks.
Rebecca Tucker
Internship: Community Development Partnership of West Virginia, Charleston, West Virginia
Becky is a junior from Somerset, Kentucky, majoring in Economics with a minor in Appalachian Studies. She created a comprehensive database of affiliated nonprofit partners of the Community Development Partnership of West Virginia and surveyed those organizations to find out how the CDP could improve their effectiveness. She also started a plan to help the agency meet their strategic goals based on the results of the survey.
Nina Yarbrough
Internship: Barter Theatre: The State Theatre of Virginia, Abingdon, Virginia
Nina is a junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, majoring in Theatre. Her internship took place in the costume shop of Barter Theatre. Her responsibilities included constructing garments of clothing for the stage, assisting with other costume-related activities, serving as a wardrobe assistant, and learning and experiencing costume shop management.
