Building upon abilities taught at the Sullivan Foundation Summer Social Entrepreneurship Institute at Sewanee University, for eight weeks, Rochelle worked with a non-profit fashion organization called Lexington Fashion Collaborative (http://lexingtonfashion.org/)located in Lexington, Kentucky. Rochelle’s view of fashion has changed since working with LFC. Not only did Rochelle learn how to walk, pose, or learn how to become a stylist, but she has learn the true meaning of fashion which is expressing one’s thought of art. Rochelle has learned the business side of the fashion industry and she has also learned the dark side of working in the fashion industry. Overall, Rochelle will be able to share with others what fashion is all about and the true importance of the internship experience.

David Kretzmann spent a total of seven weeks living and working in Cite Ecologique (www.cite-ecologique.com), an intentional ecovillage community located in Ham-Nord, Quebec building upon abilities taught at the Sullivan Foundation Summer Social Entrepreneurship Institute at Sewanee University. The purpose of the social entrepreneurship internship was to gain a direct entrepreneurial perspective of how an alternative cooperative community such as Cite Ecologique can survive and flourish. To accomplish this, David worked in the company of Nébesna Fortin while he interned and participated in the majority of the community’s ventures, including Kheops International (a spiritual products distribution business), Respecterre (a natural and organic clothing business), the community kitchen, the community school, and other such activities. Dr. Peter Hackbert served as his primary sponsor and Dr. Sean Clark served as a secondary sponsor. David primarily focused on analyzing Respecterre with an entrepreneurial perspective covering the nine key areas of Respecterre’s business, using this analysis to conclude the overall position of Respecterre in its field. David is a sophomore Entrepreneurship Independent Major.

Building upon abilities taught at the Sullivan Foundation Summer Social Entrepreneurship Institute at Sewanee University, Jalissa Hunter constructed a business plan for St. Agnes’ House (www.stagneshouse.com). For eight weeks in the summer of 2011, Jalissa Hunter became intimately familiar with the inner workings of one of the few hospitality houses left in Lexington, KY. Jalissa is a junior Biology major and she worked under the mentorship of Susan McDonald and Reynold Alcius. The mission was to learn how the hospitality works and increase her knowledge about the business so that she will be in a better position to implement a similar business in other parts of Appalachia. In efforts to discontinue unhealthy eating habits among guests, a cookbook was put in place to help those guests learn how to prepare a healthy homemade meal. The directed field experience will be utilized as a stepping stone in the process of finding out the healthcare needs of citizens in the Appalachian region. Dr. Peter Hackbert served as her primary faculty sponsor and Dr. Ronald Rosen served as her secondary sponsor.
