Appalachian IDEAS Network Showcase Results
The Berea College Entrepreneurship for the Public Good program (EPG), in collaboration with the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, hosted the Appalachian IDEAS Network Showcase 2-day competition on April 12th and 13th. There were 16 teams that competed from schools around the region. Berea College sponsored 8 teams, Eastern Kentucky University sponsored 2 teams, Hampden-Sydney College sponsored 2 teams, and Lincoln Memorial University, Oglethorpe University and the University of Maryland sponsored one team each.
First place was a tie between Berea College’s Slava Korobeynikov and Daniel Redmond, they received $2,500 each for their respective concepts, Social Innovations in Appalachia through Music (SIAM) and Carpool Xpress, LLC.
Slava’s concept, Social Innovations in Appalachia through Music (SIAM), is a social enterprise dedicated to empowering Appalachian youth by providing them with professional performance venues at heritage hotels. The concept allows Appalachian youth to gain live music performance experience in professional settings, develop a reputation, earn income, and express their cultural heritage through live performance.
Daniel’s concept, Carpool Xpress, LLC is an Android application that provides a safe and environmentally conscious community for users to participate in ridesharing, reducing the private vehicular pollution within select Appalachian urban cities. It’s geared to tackle the growing problem in the Appalachian community of increasing air pollution and cost of owning a personal vehicle.
