On February 14, 2008, a group of 39 Economics and Business students,
along with four professors, traveled to Georgetown, Kentucky, for
a tour of Toyota Motors Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK). TMMK
is Toyota’s largest production facility outside of Japan. Camrys,
Avalons, and Solaras are produced by a combination of robots and
team members. Operations in the nearly 8 million
square feet manufacturing complex include stamping, die manufacturing,
body weld, paint, plastics, assembly, and engine/axle machining
and assembly. The numerous J.D Power awards displayed throughout
the plant attest to the quality of their product. Students
saw many applications for their business and economics classes,
including just-in-time inventory, kaizen, and pull production.
This trip was funded by a gift from Don Caudill ’80, in
honor of his parents, Alfred and Shirley Wampler Caudill.
