About the Department

Our Mission
Our Mission is to provide inclusive educational opportunities aimed at developing competencies necessary for meaningful contribution to the professional and academic fields of business and economics. These opportunities are provided in a continuous learning environment for faculty and students. Departmental goals are based on the College’s established broad learning goals, Great Commitments, and aims of general education.

General Departmental Goals

  • To develop skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making;

  • To develop oral communication skills, written communication skills, quantitative skills, and technological receptivity;

  • To connect learning within the major, between the major and general education, and between the major and the students’ experiences beyond the college;

  • To develop and enhance awareness of personal responsibility for individual action, an ethical consciousness, and a commitment to service.

Professionalism
Your study in the department is meant to prepare you for entry into professional and academic fields of business and economics. Both graduate school and the business world have high standards of professionalism in achievement and conduct. Faculty members in the department bring to the classroom expectations based on their experiences in graduate school and on the job. They have high expectations of students including the following:

  • Working for academic excellence
  • Regular attendance in all classes
  • Advance notice of absence
  • Arriving at each class prepared and on time
  • Using standard American English in all writing and speaking
  • Respectful participation in class
  • Doing individual work in everything but collaborative projects
  • Active participation in team or collaborative projects and assignments
  • Wearing clothing appropriate to the situation
