Advising and Recommendations for Curriculum
Planning
Students interested in majoring in economics or business administration
are encouraged to talk with a department member early in their
academic career. Students may ask a department member to serve
as their adviser prior to formal declaration of the major. Forms
for change of adviser are available in the Office of Academic Services.
The
listing of planned course offerings, available on the department’s
web site, will be helpful in planning your curriculum. While students
ultimately are responsible for their academic choices, department
advisers can help in planning a course of study and preparing for
graduate school or careers after graduation. Students planning
study in a particular area of concentration in business may be
interested in having as their adviser a faculty member who teaches
in that area. The following are current teaching areas:
| Accounting |
Patricia Isaacs, Ed McCormack |
| Economics |
Clifford Sowell, Caryn Vazzana, Scott Steele |
| Finance |
Wayne Tolliver |
| Management |
Mark Roselli |
| Marketing |
Martie Kazura |
Business Administration
Students
planning to major in business administration need to satisfactorily
complete the courses listed below during their first four semesters,
if possible.
- MAT 115 or MAT 125, if 115 is waived or MAT 135, if 125 is waived
- BUS 120, Accounting
I
- BUS 130, Accounting II
- ECO 101, Macroeconomics
- ECO 102, Microeconomics
The economics courses (101 and 102) are not sequential; ECO 102
can be taken before ECO 101. The accounting courses are sequential;
BUS 120 must be taken before BUS 130. We strongly recommend that
a student take BUS 130 in the semester immediately following satisfactory
completion (C or higher) of BUS 120.
Other core courses, which are not required for admission to the
major but are degree requirements for all concentrations, may also
be taken during the student’s first two years. These include:
- BUS
125, Introduction to Business and Computer Applications (first
year)
- ECO 250, Statistics (after MAT 110)
- BUS 315, Management (second
year)
- BUS 363, Marketing (second year)
Economics
Prospective Economics
majors should:
Complete the basic math requirement, if applicable,
as soon as possible. Basic math is a prerequisite for both ECO
101
and ECO 102, which are the foundational course, and one or
both are therefore required for any 300 level economics course.
Continue on with the math sequence completing or waiving MAT 115, 125, and 135. These are collateral courses for
the economics major
and serve as prerequisites for core courses required of economics
majors. In addition, they serve as prerequisites for additional
required math collaterals.
