- 1-21-2011During Summer 2010, four Economics and Business Department students participated, along with faculty mentor Trish Isaacs, in Financial Literacy Essentials, as part of the college’s Undergraduate Research and Creative Project Program (URCPP). The students were Alex Huynh, a junior accounting student; Christelle Louis, a senior finance student; Winnifred Arthur, a sophomore economics major; and Daniel Barasa, a sophomore economics major.
The students researched available financial literacy training materials and resources, then developed four financial literacy workshops tailored specifically to Berea College first-year students. Workshop topics include Cash Management/Budgeting, Paying for a College Education, Savings, and Debt. These workshops, originally scheduled for October 2010, were rescheduled for January 2011. They will be presented to first-year students in coordination with Students in Free Enterprise.

- 1-21-2011Professor Clifford B. Sowell Retires June 2010
After teaching at Berea for 28 years at Berea College, Dr. Clifford B. Sowell, Professor of Economics, has retired from the Economics and Business Department. He served as department chair, on various college committees and was promoted to the George W. Matton Chair of Economics.Cliff received his A.B. from Florida State University and Ph.D. from University of Georgia and came to Berea in 1981.
Cliff and wife, Julie, also retired from Berea College Public Relations Department, now reside near Savannah, Georgia.
