Travel grants for further exploration

Travel grants for further exploration

Thanks to generous donations, the Center for International Education is able to provide a limited amount of grant funding for visits to cultural and historical sites in a student's study abroad host country.

Students can apply for either a Wade Francis Travel Grant (summer) or an Emilie Strong Smith Travel Grant (semester) in order to deepen their experiences while abroad.

Applicants must already be accepted into a study abroad program in order to be considered for one of these grants.

*No grants are available for KIIS winter programs due to their short length.

Wade Francis Travel Grant

The Wade Francis Travel Grant provides additional funds to summer study abroad students who wish to participate in cultural experiences that enhance their study abroad experience.

Successful applications will include a clear itinerary of proposed travel with a rationale for visiting the selected sites, a budget, and a statement about other financial resources at the student’s disposal.

  • Summer only
  • BIST (Berea International Summer Term) paticipants are not eligible due to the nature of BIST programs.
  • Funding of up to $500 may be awarded, but these funds may not be used for travel or living costs that are already part of the student’s program.
  • Funds are deposited directly into a student's bank account. They are not used to offset costs in the student's study abroad budget.

Applications may be submitted online here by the annual deadline of April 15th (11:59 pm).

  • Applicants must already be approved to study abroad by Berea College and by the relevant summer program abroad (e.g., KIIS).
  • Preference is given to students who have not previously traveled abroad and who will be traveling in Western Europe.
  • Students can receive a Travel Grant only once (whether Emilie Strong Smith or Wade Francis).

Emilie Strong Smith Travel Grant

These funds may not be used for travel or living costs that are part of the academic program in which the student is participating. The amount awarded is variable and will not exceed $500. • Semester only
  • Funding of up to $500 may be awarded, but these funds may not be used for travel or living costs that are already part of the student’s program.
