10x10
Excessive and wasteful use of energy is the trademark of our
modern lives. Stop the needless destruction of mountains, pollution
of air, and increase in global temperatures by promoting the
change to clean, renewable sources of energy. The 10 x 10 campaign
actively fights for clean energy by working with Berea College
to commit to using 10% renewable energy bythe year 2010.
Green Purchasing
The chemicals in cleaning products have damaging effects on the
environment, specifically the ozone layer. This campaign strives
to get the college to purchase all environmentally safe cleaning
products.
Berea Bikes
If you like inhaling clean air then you know bikes are going
to have to take over the world. With this program we are trying
to do just that on our campus in Berea! Berea Bikes is working
to establish a community bike system, where blue bikes are
available at any location on campus and are free for students
to use. In our cycling utopia, you can ride a bike to class
and leave it for the next student to ride home on.
Women’s Health Initiative
It is time to start talking about women’s health. This
initiative provides information to women of Berea College on
the special needs of our bodies and how healthcare providers
in and around Berea can meet those needs. The initiative also
organizes campus events to further promote student awareness
of women’s health.
SOA Watch
SOA Watch is an independent organization that seeks to close
the US Army School of the Americas, under whatever name it
is called, through vigils and fasts, demonstrations and nonviolent
protest, as well as media and legislative work. SOA graduates
have included many of the most notorious human rights abusers
from Latin America. SOA graduates have led military coups and
are responsible for massacres of hundreds of people.
Fair Trade
Yes, social justice is even invading your coffee cup! What you
drink is produced by farmers that aren’t paid enough
to provide the basic needs for their families. Stop the cycle
of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer by helping
HEAL to advocate Fair Trade beverages at every location on
campus. Fair Trade = paying farmers a living wage.
