 About
the Program
Adopt-a-Grandparent (AGP) is an outreach program for the elderly
in the community of Berea, Kentucky. The AGP program matches each
volunteer with a resident of the local long-term care center, The
Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility, and Berea Health Care, whom the volunteer
visits for at least an hour each week. AGP also offers monthly
programs for all volunteers and grandparents.
Example programs include:
- Christmas caroling
- Luaus
- Flower planting
- Music performances
- Arts and crafts
- Games and activities
- Manicures
Our mission:
To show the elderly of the Berea community that someone cares by
building friendships based on love, faith, hope, and understanding.
Our goal is to be a consistent positive force for the remainder
of their lives in a way that not only changes those who are served,
but also enriches the lives of those who serve.
Why we do what we do:
Everyone, including the elderly, needs family, relatives, and friends
with whom they can talk and spend time. People crave the contact
of others, even if it is simply a weekly visit in the comfort
of their own room. The friendship that you as a volunteer will
have with the residents of the Terrace and Berea Health Care will influence your life
and theirs in many ways.
Adopt-a-Grandparent volunteers and staff have a unique opportunity
to build one-on-one relationships with an elder and offer our greatest
gifts: love and a smile. You may learn a lot and begin to look
at life from new perspectives; you may simply realize for the first
time that the elderly are unique human beings with amazing things
to share. Spending time with your adopted “grandparents” helps
them to reflect on the day, good or bad; it enables them to view
themselves and the world through someone else’s company;
it allows them to reminisce and talk freely about anything. At
the same time you will both gain a new friend.
