Berea Reads and Berea Counts provide individualized tutoring for students who need help in the areas of reading and math. Students from kindergarten through fifth grade spend three hours per week over eight weeks working with a Berea College student who develops lesson plans to address the students’ specific needs.
“Working with Berea Reads allowed me to put many of the things I have learned in my education classes into practice. One of the best parts of the summer was seeing the pride the children felt when they realized their accomplishments, their progress, and their own abilities.” –Kelsey A. Young, ‘12
Participants for this program are selected through teacher referrals, and are paired with a tutor based on the student’s level of need. Most of the Berea College student tutors are elementary education or education majors, and professional consultants train them in developing specialized lesson plans.
