The Freshmen Bonner Scholars work together in teams of five planning, coordinating and leading after school programs for local children. These programs focus on leadership, community service, civic engagement, self-esteem, and working together with people different from us. These themes are incorporated into programs that teach the participants about who they are and where they want to go in the future. Another important aspect of the Freshmen Bonner Programs is to introduce the participants to college life. By having our programs on Berea College’s campus and taking the students to eat at Food Service, we hope to encourage the participants to see that college is not a scary place, but in fact a goal that they can reach.
