About the Department
In 1990, after working with John Stephenson,
President of Berea, the Bonner Foundation established the first
Bonner Scholars Program at Berea College. During the period from
1993 to 1998 Berea College was not involved in the Program, but
rejoined as of the 1998-99 academic year. During 1998-99, 40 students
distributed throughout the four classes were designated as Bonner
Scholars and the goal is to eventually reach a total of 60 students
in the Program.
The Bonner Scholars Program offers the following
opportunities to students:
- Labor positions in service beginning with
the freshman year
- Leadership training Regional conferences
and service events
- A mentoring program with upper-class students
involved in service
- Monthly enrichment programs, including guest
speakers
- National Bonner Foundation resources
- Financial assistance for summer service
projects
- Connections with students at the other
23 Bonner colleges
