Berea College is dedicated to assisting students with disabilities. We make every effort to comply with Federal ADA guidelines
while helping students in any way we can. In addition to
working with the Disability Services Coordinator, students
should refer to the following guidelines:
- Always have a backup plan. In the case of an
emergency—such as battery failure or a flat tire—do
you know who you would contact for help? Keep emergency
phone numbers with you, as well as your scooter/wheelchair’s
make, model, serial number, and any warranty information you
might have. Make sure you inform the Disability Services
Coordinator of your backup plan, so that Berea College can provide
you with help if you need it.
- Know how to operate your vehicle in a safe manner. Be
aware of other students on walkways, and be aware of safe speeds
on campus.
- Keep your scooter/wheelchair in good shape. Here
are some routine maintenance tips you should follow:
- Charge battery nightly. Avoid letting battery become
discharged to below 30%.
- Check tire pressure regularly, and check tires for cracks
or wear.
- Avoid letting the electrical components of the wheelchair
or scooter get wet (either when cleaning or when out in wet
weather)
You may want to keep a maintenance kit handy. If you choose
to do so, here is a suggested list of items to keep:
- Tire pump and gauge
- Lubricant (WD40)
- Screw driver, pliers
- Extra wheel in case of flat
- Extra battery
- Can of Fix-A-Flat
You should also have your scooter/wheelchair serviced once a year
to keep it in good working condition. Students are responsible
for maintenance and repair charges for their personal wheelchairs
and scooters.
