B.A. Degree with a Major in Women’s Studies
Participants in the Women’s Studies major not only learn about women’s experience from a variety of disciplines, but also directly apply their knowledge in the framework of an internship or directed study. Women’s Studies students also gain professional experience through Berea College’s Labor Program as teaching associates or as workers in the Office of Women’s Studies.
Requirements for the Major
A major in Women’s Studies is achieved by the completion of the following requirements, in addition to the General Education and electives required for a degree:
Required Core Courses
WST 124, 228 (also HIS), 315, 401
Required Capstone Course
WST 458
Required Distribution Courses
One (1) of the following courses, taken in any sequence: WST 486, 495, or 498. And two (2) additional course credits, one chosen from a Social Science area and one from a Humanities area, as follows:
Social Science Area
WST 202 (also AFR and PSC), 207 (also CFS), 220 (also APS), 225 (also AFR/APS/PSJ/SENS), 325 (also SOC), 366 (also CFS)
Humanities Area
WST 135 (also AFR and ENG), WST 211 (also REL), WST 212 (also AFR and ENG), WST 223 (also REL), WST 237 (also ENG), or WST 286: Gender and Communication (also COM)
Required WST Elective Courses
Two (2) elective course credits chosen from General Education courses approved for Women’s Studies credit; courses listed in the required core courses above; Short Term courses approved for WST credit; or international studies and Special Topics courses approved for Women’s Studies credit.

Students interested in this major should take WST 124 for an introduction.
Admission to the Major
No additional or special curricular requirements must be met for admission to the Women’s Studies major.
Course Sequencing Considerations
WST 124, 228, 315, 401, and 458 should be taken in sequence. WST 458 is to be taken during the senior year.
