Chairperson: B. Starnes
Faculty: K. Akural, B. Richardson, C. Richardson, J. Saderholm, and A. Webb
The Education Studies Department currently offers two major programs: the B.A. in Education Studies, for students interested in pursuing the study of education without certification; and the B.A. in Education Studies with Elementary Certification P-5, for those who wish to become certified to teach at the Primary (P) through 5th grade level. A third program in the Department, the B.A. in Education Studies with Middle Grades Certification 5-9, for those who wish to become certified to teach at the 5th through 9th grade level, will not be available to new majors until further notice.
The Education Studies Department also offers courses for students majoring in other departments that provide the option of teacher certification. Students interested in teaching may pursue certification for grades 8-12 in English, Mathematics, and Social Studies; for grades 5-12 in Family and Consumer Sciences, and Technology; for grades P-12 in Art (currently not accepting new majors), Music, and Physical Education; and for Birth-Kindergarten in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education. Specific requirements for each program are listed under the appropriate academic program elsewhere in this section of the Catalog, in addition to the information in the Requirements for all Students Seeking Certification.
Students seeking certification at all levels conclude their preparation with a pre-professional Spring Term practicum and a professional Fall Term of Student Teaching and related activities.
