The purpose of the Department of Physical Education and Health is to provide a challenging curriculum leading to the development of abilities and convictions in a student’s field of concentration. The Department promotes in the Physical Education student the desire to fully develop the ability to constructively use all of his/her potential capacities for movement, movement analysis, and movement education. Training and experiences are provided that will enhance the student’s skills and knowledge in exercise science, in communication, creative self-expression, critical reflection, research, and leadership in the classroom and in an activity setting.

The Physical Education major requires the student to complete a series of core courses, and provides four specialized concentrations from which a student may choose. Required and elective courses in each concentration will provide competencies and skills necessary for a variety of careers. The four concentrations are: Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, Wellness and Health Promotion, Physical Education with P-12 Certification, and Physical Education: General. Students interested in any Physical Education major should contact a departmental faculty member as early as possible in their College career to explore areas of concentration. The Department also offers minor programs in Dance, Health, and Health Teaching.

The Physical Education and Health Department also administers the College’s General Education curriculum Lifetime Fitness & Health and Physical Activity requirements. The first component, PEH 100, is designed to enhance the dimensions of fitness and health during College and beyond. The course is one-half (1/2) credit, preferably taken the first year of enrollment. Following successful completion of this course, two 1/4-credit PED activity courses at the 200 level are required. These two courses may be selected according to the individual’s need and/or interest. If the student’s swimming skills are below a minimal safety/survival level at the conclusion of PEH 100, one of the two courses must be PED 200. (Also see PED Activity Courses in this section.)
