B.A. Degree with a Major in Speech Communication
A major in Speech Communication is achieved by the completion of the following requirements, in addition to the General Education and electives required for a degree:
Required Core Courses—COM 100 and 300
Required Capstone Course—COM 410
Required Distribution Courses—Four (4) additional courses, one chosen from each of the four following pairs: 1) COM 101 or 102; 2) COM 200 or 201; 3) COM 202 or 203; and 4) COM 301 or 302
Required COM Elective Courses—A total of three (3) additional COM elective courses chosen from the pairs listed in the distribution courses above and/or: COM 103 (a 1/4 credit course that must be completed 4 times to equal a full course credit); 186/286/386/486; 390/490A, 390/490B, 395/495, 397/497A, 397/497B, and 398/498.
Exploring the Major—Students interested in this major should take COM 100 as early as possible.
Admission to the Major—No special curricular requirements must be met for admission to the Speech Communication major, however students are encouraged to complete COM 100 prior to declaring this major.
Course Sequencing Considerations (in order to complete degree requirements within eight terms)—Students are encouraged to complete COM 300, a survey course that helps prepare students for other course work in the major, before or during the term in which they declare the major. COM 410 should be taken during the senior year.
Proficiency Requirements for Retention in and Completion of the Major—Majors also must satisfy departmental standards for effective oral and written communication.
Other Considerations and Recommendations—Students in the minor also must satisfy departmental standards for effective oral and written communication.
