The mission of the Economics and Business Department
is to provide inclusive educational opportunities aimed at developing
competencies necessary for meaningful contribution to the professional
and academic fields of business and economics. These opportunities
are provided in a continuous learning environment for faculty
and students. Departmental goals are based on the College’s
established broad learning goals, Great Commitments, and aims
of General Education.
General Departmental Goals
- To develop skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making;
- To develop oral and written communication skills (as described in plans posted on the Department’s Web site), quantitative skills, and technological receptivity;
- To connect learning within the major, between the major and General Education curriculum, and between the major and the students’s experiences beyond the College; and
- To develop and enhance awareness of personal responsibility for individual actions, an ethical consciousness, and
a commitment to service.
Professionalism
Study in the Department is meant to prepare students for entry into the professional and academic fields of business and economics. Both graduate school and the business world have high standards of professionalism in achievement and conduct. Faculty members in the Department bring to the classroom expectations based on their experiences in graduate school and on the job. They have high expectations of students including the following:
- working for academic excellence;
- attending all classes regularly;
- providing advanced notice of absence;
- arriving at each class prepared and on time;
- using standard American English in all writing and speaking;
- participating respectfully in class;
- doing individual work in everything but collaborative projects;
- participating actively in team or collaborative projects and assignments; and
- wearing clothing appropriate to the situation.
The Economics and Business Department offers two majors—a B.A. in Economics and a B.S. in Business Administration—and two minors, one in Economics and one in Business Administration.
