B.A. Degree with a Major in Art: Studio

A major in Art: Studio is achieved by completion of the following requirements, in addition to the General Education and electives required for a degree:

Required Foundation/Core Courses—ART 110, 115, 121, 124, and 245.

Required Capstone Courses—ART 493 (noncredit course), with a required oral presentation and senior exhibition.

Required Distribution Courses—ART 205; three (3) studio courses in different studio areas including both 2-D and 3-D experiences, selected from ART 111, 116, 123, 125, 130; and one (1) studio medium taken to the fourth level, selected from ART 211/311/411, 216/316/416, 223/323/423, 225/325/425, 230/330/43.

Exploring the Major—Students considering this major must enroll in the 100-level foundation/core courses during their first three terms at Berea.

Admission to the Major—Before declaring this major, students must complete ART 110, 115, 121, and 124, with a grade of C or higher. At the completion of these four courses, an entry portfolio must be submitted to the Department for consideration and acceptance to the major. A minimum standard of achievement, as determined by the Art faculty, will be required for admission. Only upon satisfactory completion of the portfolio will the student be accepted to the major.

Course Sequencing Considerations (in order to complete degree requirements within eight terms)—Students interested in this major should take General Education requirements at the same time as Art courses. Studio courses at the 100 level are offered every Fall and Spring term. ART 121 is offered in the Fall Term and ART 124 is offered in the Spring Term. Upper-level (200 and higher) ART courses should not be taken until the prerequisite courses and the appropriate 100-level media course have been completed. ART 245 should be completed by the second term of the sophomore year. Studio classes are taken in sequence and no 200-level studio class may be taken without the prerequisite foundation/core course. All majors must complete satisfactorily ART 493 during the last regular term of residence.

Proficiency Requirements for Retention in and Completion of the Major—In addition to all foundation/core courses, and the above-stated minimum grade of C in ART 110, 115, 121, and 124, all ART majors must satisfy departmental standards for visual, written, and oral communication by completing successfully the sophomore portfolio, and senior-seminar requirements. All students choosing the Art: Studio major must either participate in a group senior exhibition or a one-person exhibition.

Other Considerations and Recommendations—No Short Term Art course may be applied to the major requirements.
