B.A. Degree with a Major in Art
History
A major in Art History is achieved by completion of the following courses, in addition to the General Education and electives required for a degree:
Required Foundation/Core
Courses— ART 110, 115, 120, and 245
Required Distribution Courses—Three (3) additional Art History courses selected from ART 242, 246, 248,
250, 262, 267, 270, 275, or approved 186/286/386/486 courses; one (1) Studio course; ART 490A or 490B; and
one (1) ART elective
Required Collateral Courses—Two (2) collateral courses from different departments, chosen in consultation with the Art Department, selected from history, literature, the history of music or philosophy, or aesthetics; and a foreign language through the third (103) level (French or German are recommended)
Required Capstone Courses—ART 492
and 493 (noncredit courses), with an oral presentation in ART 492 and
a formal senior oral presentation developed from ART 490A or
ART 490B and
presented in ART 493
Exploring the Major—Students considering this major must enroll in the 100-level foundation/core courses during their first three terms at Berea. Art Studio courses are included in the Art History major to give the student exposure to studio techniques and familiarity with studio vocabulary.
Admission to the Major—Before declaring this major, students must complete ART 110, 115, and 120 with a grade of C or higher. At the completion of these three courses, an entry portfolio must be submitted to the Department for consideration and acceptance to the major. A minimum standard of achievement, as determined by the Art faculty, will be required for admission. Only upon satisfactory completion of the portfolio will the student be accepted to the major.
Course Sequencing Considerations (in order to complete degree
requirements within eight terms)—Students interested in this major should take General Education requirements at the same time as ART courses. Studio courses at the 100-level are offered every Fall and Spring term. ART 120 is offered only in the Spring Term. Upper-level (200 and higher) ART courses should not be taken until the prerequisite courses and the appropriate 100-level media course have been completed. ART 245 should be completed by the second term of sophomore year. Upper-level Art History courses should not be taken until ART 120 has been completed. Studio classes are taken in sequence and no 200-level studio class may be taken without the prerequisite foundation/core course. All majors must complete satisfactorily ART 492 and 493 during the last two regular terms of residence.
Proficiency Requirements for Retention in and Completion of
the Major—In addition to all foundation/core courses,
and the above-stated minimum grade of C in ART 110, 115, and 120, all Art History majors must satisfy departmental standards for visual, written, and oral communication by completing successfully the sophomore portfolio, and senior-seminar requirements. All students choosing the Art History major must make an oral presentation in ART 492 and prepare
a formal senior oral presentation, which will be developed from ART 490A or 490B and presented in ART 493.
Other Considerations and Recommendations—No Short Term ART course may be applied to the major requirements.
