B.A.
Degree with a Major in Art Education, with Teacher Certification in Art:
P-12
Primary to 12th grade teaching certification may be earned through a major in Art together with required course work and experiences in education. Students must meet all requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Program, for admission to Student Teaching, and for recommendation for certification, including the required admission and exit portfolios.
A major in Art Education is achieved by completion of the following courses, in addition to the General Education and electives required for a degree:
Required Foundation/Core
Courses—ART 110, 115, 120, and 245
Required Distribution Courses—Three (3) Studio courses in different media including both 2-D and 3-D experiences selected from ART 111, 116, 123, 125, 130; one (1) Studio course taken to the second level, chosen from ART 211, 216, 223, 225, 230; ART 236; one (1) additional Art History course selected from ART 242, 246, 248, 250, 262, 267, 270, 275, 286, 386, or 486
Required Education Studies Courses—EDS 150, 228, 349, 355 (or approved alternative experience), 479, 480, 481, and 482
Required Capstone Courses—ART 492 and 493 (noncredit courses), with required exhibition or oral presentation of a research topic
Exploring the Major—Students considering the Art Education major must complete the 100-level foundation/core courses during their first three terms at Berea. Also see Teacher Education Program below.
Admission to the Major—Before declaring this major, students must complete ART 110, 115, and 120 with a grade of C or higher. After completing satisfactorily these three courses, an entry portfolio must be submitted to the Department for consideration and acceptance to the major. A minimum standard of achievement, as determined by the Art faculty, will be required for admission. Only upon satisfactory completion of the portfolio will the student be accepted to the major. See the “Requirements for Admission to the Teacher Education Program” under Education Studies for that program’s admission requirements, including the minimum overall GPA of 2.5.
Course Sequencing Considerations (in order to complete degree
requirements within nine terms)—Students interested in the Art Education major should take General Education requirements at the same time as ART courses. Studio courses at the 100-level are offered every Fall and Spring term. ART 120 is offered only in the Spring Term. Upper-level (200 and higher) ART courses should not be taken until the prerequisite courses and the appropriate 100-level media course have been completed. ART 245 should be completed by the second term of sophomore year. Studio classes are taken in sequence and no 200-level studio class may be taken without the prerequisite foundation/core course. All majors must complete satisfactorily ART 492 and 493 during the last two regular terms of residence prior to entering the Student Teaching (ninth) term. Also see TEP sequencing recommendations below.
Proficiency Requirements for Retention in and Completion of
the Major—In addition to all foundation/core courses, and the above-stated minimum grade of C in ART 110, 115, and 120, all Art Education majors must satisfy Art Department standards for visual, written, and oral communication by completing successfully the sophomore portfolio, and senior-seminar requirements. All students in this major must either participate in a senior group exhibition or give a formal public talk on a topic of their choice. (Also see “Requirements for all Students Seeking Certification.”)
Admission to and Completion of the Teacher Education Program—Students are encouraged strongly to take EDS 150 in the second term of the first year, but no later than the first term of sophomore year. (Multiple sections of EDS 150 are offered each Fall and Spring term.) Those students past their first year (including transfers) will be given priority for registration in EDS 150. Prior to the first day of the EDS 150 class, students must have completed a state criminal records clearance, which takes 6-8 weeks to be processed. Students will learn about this procedure during pre-registration. ART 236 must be completed either prior to or in the eighth term. EDS 228, 349, and 355 (or approved alternative) must be completed prior to the eighth term. EDS 479 and 480, together with a school practicum of 3-4 hours daily, must be taken in the eighth term. Up to two additional course credits may be taken in the eighth term. Only EDS 481 (1 credit) and 482 (3 credits) may be taken in the ninth term. Throughout their preparation, students seeking teacher certification are expected to seek out rich and substantive experiences with students of the ages they plan to teach beyond those associated with EDS courses. Such activities include SFA-related service work (e.g., One-on-One Tutoring), working with after-school programs, summer camp experiences, and the like. Completion of teacher certification requires nine terms. For further information about the Teacher Education Program, Student Teaching, and Recommendation for Certification, see “Requirements for all Students Seeking Certification.”
Other Considerations and Recommendations—No Short Term ART course may be applied to the major requirements.
