B.S. Degree with a Major in Agriculture and
Natural Resources in Sustainable Systems
A major in Agriculture and Natural Resources in Sustainable Systems is a wise choice for students seeking a more flexible program that is not production oriented. This program retains a natural-resource foundation with a strong underpinning of science courses and a significant number of social-science electives. The program is flexible enough to allow students the opportunity to emphasize specific areas of agricultural sustainability.
A major in Agriculture and Natural Resources in Sustainable Systems is achieved by completion of the following courses, in addition to the General Education and electives required for a degree:
Required Core Courses—SENS 100, ANR 106, and ENG 275; ANR 110 or 130; ANR 170 or ECO 102;
two (2) courses chosen from the following: ANR 310, 340, or 360; and one of the following two options:
A) ANR 494 (noncredit), plus one (1) elective at the 300 level or higher, or B) ANR 395/495 (for credit);
Required Collateral Courses—One of the following three options: A) CHM 131 and CHM 221, B) CHM 134 and CHM 221, or C) CHM 113; two (2) courses chosen from any BIO, PHY, or SENS rubric, one of which must be at the 200 level or above; and two (2) courses chosen from the social sciences (excluding ANR 170 or ECO 102),
one (1) of which must be at the 200 level or above.
Required Capstone Course—ANR 492 (1/2 credit)
Exploring the Major—Students considering this major should enroll in and complete ANR 106 (Fall Term), ANR 110 (Fall Term), ANR 130 (Spring Term), and SENS 100 (Fall or Spring term) preferably all during their first year.
Admission to the Major—No additional or special curricular requirements must be met for admission into the major.
Course Sequencing Considerations (in order
to complete degree requirements within eight terms)—The selection of courses must be done carefully with assistance from the Academic Adviser, thus students interested in the major should contact a member of the Department as early as possible in their College career. ANR 110 and 130 are prerequisites for several more advanced classes and should be completed by the end of the first year. ANR 170 or ECO 102, SENS 100, and CHM requirements should be completed by the end of the sophomore year. Students should take at least one 300-level ANR course in the Fall Term of the sophomore year. ANR 494 should be taken prior to senior year. ANR 492 (capstone) must be taken in the Fall Term of senior year.
Other Considerations in the Major—Students also must satisfy departmental standards for effectiveness in written and oral communication.
