Student Expenses

A student and his or her family are responsible for the “fixed costs” (room, board, and fees) listed below. However, for those who qualify on the basis of need—and most students do—financial aid is available to defray all or part of these costs. The average amount freshman pay for the first year is approximately $1,560 for these costs. Fewer than 10 percent of Berea students are asked to cover the full cost of board, room, and fees.

Health Insurance

All students attending Berea College are required to carry health insurance through the College. For those students who are covered by parental or individual plans, this mandatory College policy serves as secondary, “excess” coverage. The policy provides primary coverage for students with no other insurance.

The insurance premium is part of the student expense budget and reflected there as a fee. Financial Aid is applied to this cost, based on need, as established by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Therefore, most students are not asked to pay the insurance premium for this required insurance.

See the Student Handbook for more information about the administration of this policy.
