Mission
Our goal is to support
safe, responsible, and informed biking in and around Berea by providing
a space where students and community members alike can learn essential
mechanic skills, acquire a great ride at a reasonable price, or
give to the program and get a lot back in return.
- REPAIR: Berea
Bikes is intended to help people learn how to fix their own bikes,
so repairs are free (minus cost of new parts, if needed) as long
as the person helps and is interested in learning. Repairs
cost $10 an hour if the bike is dropped off for us to fix.
- RENTAL: All
rentals require a $20 refundable deposit. 2 weeks costs $5, one
month costs $10. The fee may be waived if the person volunteers
shop hours, where 2 hours equals $5. The deposit is still required
but is fully refunded when the bike comes back in good shape.
- SALES: Occasionally,
bikes become available for sale (or we’re talked into selling
a rental bike if inventory allows). Prices vary according to
the type, brand, and condition of the bike, but are generally
between $50-$100. Spending the same amount with Berea Bikes as
you would at Wal-Mart will get you a much higher quality and
longer lasting vehicle.
- BUILD
A BIKE: By volunteering for 10 hours in the shop,
a person can earn the right to build their own bike for free
from our designated used frames and parts. Volunteer activities
include helping to repair bikes that are part of the rental
fleet or will be for sale, organizing parts, cleaning the shop,
and administrative or PR duties.
