The Willis D. Weatherford, Jr. Campus Christian Center

Chi Alpha

Chi Alpha, a national organization of the Assemblies of God U.S.A. for female and male students in colleges and universities, serves students of all Christian denominations on the campus of Berea College.  As stated on the denominational website, the name, “Chi Alpha,”  originates from a text in 2 Corinthians 5:20:

We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us.  We implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.”

On the basis of the previous text, the denomination chose a Greek phrase from another text, “christou apostoloi,” which means “Christ’s sent ones,” as the name of this national student organization.  The first Greek letters Chi (X) and Alpha (A) of these two words serve as the abbreviated name for the organization, also reminding the members to reflect the life of Jesus in their own lives.

Students from all Christian denominations may become members of Chi Alpha.  The organization accomplishes its ministry through regular meetings that include worship of God, prayer, biblical study, and openness to the Holy Spirit.  Chi Alpha also both offers events such as book tables and seminars and participates in the Campus Christian Council of Berea College.  The organization encourages students to pray privately as well as in groups, to study Christian scripture, to gather for fellowship, to participate in community services, to volunteer for mission work during times between school terms, to participate in other ministries on campus, and to share their faith with others both on campus and in the larger community.

Chi Alpha meets each Monday, from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m., in the Navy V-12 Lounge of the Alumni Building. For more information, contact the staff sponsor, Mr. Bill Ramsay, at the following address: CPO Box 2208; Berea College; Berea, Kentucky 40404.
