Brushy Fork Annual Institute

Early Bird Sessions

Arrive early this year and take advantage of one of our four Early Bird session offerings. These sessions will be held prior to the Annual Institute on Tuesday, September 11, 2012, from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
These sessions are offered to Annual Institute attendees at no additional cost.

Legal Issues for Nonprofits
Session Leader: Conley Salyer

This session endeavors to answer every question you might bring with you. So make a list – we’ll check it twice together. Common past issues have included the difference between a nonprofit and a tax-exempt organization; how to form a new nonprofit and what this costs; board duties and liabilities; and how to work with government officials, raise money over the Internet, and what to expect when operating outside the United States.

The takeaways for this session are the answers to your questions! Plus, a list of further areas you will want to explore in the months and years ahead.

Mastering the Art of the Personal Ask
Session Leader: Lee Ellen Martin

In this session, you will learn how to ask for a gift. You will learn how to build the relationship with the donor, when to make the ask, how to make the ask and how to overcome objections. You will have an opportunity to practice making an ask with other participants. You will also learn fun techniques to help in making connections with your donors. This session will be a practical guide for volunteers, staff members or a combination of both! Staff and volunteers both have a responsibility to be asking for gifts and this session will help prepare them individually and as a team to do just that!

Berea: Where Art’s Alive
Session Leader: Berea Tourism Commission

Berea Festival of Learnshops

This session will detail the ongoing efforts of the City of Berea’s Tourism Commission to use the arts as a basis for local economic development. Participants will learn about the design and formation process of Berea’s Learnshops, community workshops that last from two hours to five days and allow participants to pursue their interests in sustainable living, Appalachian crafts, and various literary, traditional, fiber, culinary, and Native American folk arts under the guidance of local professional artists. This initiative also makes professional development available to educators, providing field trips to artists’ studios and course-curricular resource guides.

Come share in discussions with city officials, curriculum designers and local working artists while learning how the City of Berea created the Learnshops in partnership with local artists, federal agencies, and educational institutions and funded these efforts through community grants and tourism taxes.

This session will be held at the Berea City Hall (212 Chestnut Street) with trolley rides to Artist Studio Tours located in the Old Town District.
